Ilha de Marajó

Located about 80 km from Belém, the Marajo island has an area of nearly 50, 000 km², and is the world’s largest fluvial island. Its 250,000 inhabitants are outnumbered by buffaloes that squelch around in the swamps in the North. An ecological paradise, the island has beautiful wild beaches and rich flora and fauna. At least 361 bird species are found here like the famous scarlet ibis that can be seen almost everywhere on the island; pre-Colombian ceramics have also been restored here.
